WESTEND – Townhouse
THE CHALLENGE
The clients wanted to change the existing layout of the kitchen completely, a U-shape with raised bar detail closing off the outlook to the lounge area. They liked the idea of an island with comfortable bar seating. They were open to colours and finishes but keen to have a more contemporary style with a marble look worktop. The house is a Georgian style townhouse with high ceilings, tall windows and original cornicing.
THE OUTCOME
The existing kitchen had an opening into the lounge however quite short in comparison to the high ceilings and narrow in width. I advised the clients to open this up as much as possible to really enhance the feeling of space within the two areas and make it feel more as one, also giving us more room to fit in a larger island.
The design comprises of a long run of units with good size island. This island has become the central point of this kitchen, plenty of space for cooking, seating, drinking, family and lots of laughing. We played around with the colours at first looking at lighter tones with white marble style tops however I wanted to see how the clients felt about going much darker. They had seen our matt black display and liked it however were slightly cautious of going for something as dark. I suggested black with a lighter top to ease them into it however dark on dark would give the look something extra special. A visit to the Cosentino distribution centre helped with the final decision, the clients being able to see the Dekton Kelya in full slab format sealed it for them.
We decided to use the Kelya on the island downturn to the lounge side of the kitchen creating a dramatic focal point also using it as the back splash behind the sink area. The dark top with the warm copper like vein inspired us to use the brushed gold taps from Zip for both the main tap and the separate drinking water tap and font. The units are from the Segmento handle less style kitchen range at Poggenpohl in matt black with black lacquer handle rail, a more industrial design look.
The final layout ended up being the perfect solution giving us a good sized recess to create a booth style dining area and with the help of Flounce Bespoke Interiors comfortable, upholstered bench seating.
The perfect area to dine, relax, work and home school.
