APARTMENT – Open Plan Kitchen

THE CHALLENGE

The client asked us to come up with a kitchen design in a more contemporary style to contrast the original features being restored within the flat including a very detailed cornice, angelic corbels and ceiling rose. The client had also recently returned from a trip to New York and was keen for us to use an intense and moody colour pallet. They had worked with Poggenpohl some years ago and always loved the brand. It was great to work with this client as he was adventurous and was keen for the kitchen to stand out, preferring to stay away from neutral tones.

THE OUTCOME

Originally the room was split into the living room and separate kitchen. The wall now removed to create an open plan space. We felt there wasn’t enough room for an island as such, however decided on the use of a peninsula to separate the two areas and also create a bar detail for two people on the lounge side also having direct access to the wine cooler.

Also with storage an issue we thought we would put the ceiling height to good use and stack an additional row of shallow depth units above the tall run and return it down the right side framing off the kitchen completely. By using the shallow depth units to the right of the tall run this allowed us to keep the peninsula that bit longer. As opposed to having a full depth run of tall units impacting on the floor space. These additional storage units are finished in Titanium Anthracite laminate, adding a bit of texture and depth to the design. All touch to open to keep them looking discreet. The main colour is Diamond Grey laminate however rather than go for a popular handle less look we decided to use a brushed gold handle.

The client also carrying the matt gold throughout the flat on door knobs, radiator controls and exposed pipework and even on the sash & case windows. We also used the brushed gold tap from Hansgrohe to highlight this detail further. We proposed the use of the Bora cooktop with integrated extraction, perfect solution here avoiding the need for an overhead cooker hood which would be imposing, and interrupt the beautiful ceiling design above. Having the hob on the peninsula allows the cook to look out towards the large living room window and take in the superb views of the city, be part of the conversion within the living room or just catch up on their favourite shows on the TV above the fireplace.

We very much enjoyed working on this design, a beautiful apartment with a stunning outlook and short walk to beautiful Westend parks.
